Show Report
Synonymous with Frankie Howerd, Up Pompeii brilliantly written by Miles Tredinnick, The Rye Players had a great opportunity to perform this piece as a world premier for the non-professional stage – what a coup for them. Hysterically funny, full of innuendo, a cast of 11 obviously enjoyed in true farce fashion total confusion, the use of love and sleeping potions administered to the wrong folks, with the action taking place within the courtyard of Ludicrus Sextus with rooms and cupboards off, in pre-eruption Pompeii. First time Director Amy Shortman proved most successful in all respects and congratulations must go to her and the group of well cast characters taking up the challenge. The set was cleverly designed, built and painted, finished with good dressings, props and excellent costumes. Footwear was in keeping with the period. Good attention to detail in makeup, hair styling and wigs. Andy Godfrey undoubtedly played his part of Lurcio with excellence, at a cracking pace, using the stage well, together with Howerd facial expressions and asides. He was ably supported, in particular with Alan Sinden’s interpretation of Captain Treacherus’ aid Kretinus. Young Nausius innocently played by Ben Burford, with Liz Plampton as the superb sexy Suspenda. A professional team effort.
